Smithsburg: Fascinating Past, Prosperous Present
Smithsburg’s history as a town dates back to 1813, when town founder Christopher “Stuffle” Smith bought the tract of land formerly known as “part of Shadrack’s Lot.” The town was incorporated in 1846.
A settlement might have existed in the area as early as 1787. Many farmers moved into the area because of its fertile soil. Farming and orchards are still important; peaches and apples are plentiful — as are roadside fruit and vegetable stands.
The town also played a role in the Civil War, when residents helped care for wounded soldiers after the battles of Gettysburg, Monterey, South Mountain and Antietam. In addition, there was a cavalry battle following the Battle of Gettysburg. There is a Civil War Trails marker on the site, just east of Md. 77.
Interesting local attractions include the Smithsburg Town Museum and Smithsburg Veterans Park.
