Welcome to Smithsburg

The town of Smithsburg is located in northeastern Washington County, between the Appalachian Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay watershed and just minutes off Interstate 70. A rural community surrounded by bucolic farmland, wonderful orchards and a quaint downtown, Smithsburg is also within a two-hour drive from the nation’s capitol, many state parks and Baltimore — home to the well-known Inner Harbor. This proximity offers residents the option to commute from their sleepy hamlet to larger cities for work, while still maintaining the family atmosphere a small town provides.

Directly influenced by migration paths, the arrival of the B&O Railroad and advances in agricultural technology, by 1923 much of the existing village of Smithsburg had been built. Today — aside from the improved infrastructure and recent construction of suburban-type housing — Smithsburg retains its mid-19th to early-20th century architectural character and is an excellent example of a community relatively untouched by modern, 20th-century architectural trends.

Smithsburg enjoys a year-round bevy of activities — from summer hiking in the cool canopy of trees along the Appalachian Trail to snow skiing at one of the nearby resorts. The agricultural influence of the town creates abundant opportunity to purchase fresh fruit including strawberries in the spring, peaches in the summer, and apples and pumpkins in the fall at Smithsburg’s many orchard stands. Smithsburg summers are bursting with activity as the town hosts a large carnival and Smithsburg Pride Days. In addition, a number of state parks in both Maryland and neighboring Pennsylvania make Smithsburg a wonderland for all outdoor enthusiasts. Together, Smithsburg’s open-air spaces, delightful small shops and restaurants and hometown atmosphere, provide a quality of life unmatched in more urban settings.
